BACKROUND
Egbedore Local Government was created out of the defunct Ede Local Government on 3rd May, 1989 under the then federal Military Government headed by General Ibrahim Babangida. It is one of the seven hundred and seventy-four (774) Local Government Areas recognised by the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and also one of the thirty (30) Local Government Areas in Osun State. The Local Government covers an area of approximately 102 square kilometres. It is bounded by Ede North Local Government Area to the South, Ejigbo and Surulere Local Government Areas to the West, Irepodun Local Government Area to the North and both Olorunda and Osogbo Local Government Areas to the East.

The headquarters of the Local Government is the ancient town of Awo which was founded about 800 years ago by Oshimo, one of the two sons of Olofin in Ile-Ife, Osun State. The Local Government comprises of many other historical and notable towns and village such as Ido-Osun, Ara, Iragberi, Ojo, Ikotun, Ilawe, Iwoye, Idoo, Ofatedo, Okinni, Aro, Ekuro, Olorunsogo, Ooye, Ilaasan, Igbokiti, Abudo and many others. The map, Figure I shows towns and villages in Egbedore Local Government Area.

Although, the breakdown of provisional head-count of Year 2006 is still being awaited from the National Population Commission. However, the 1991 census conducted by the National Population Commission, put the population of Egbedore Local Government at 40,293. The Table I shows the analysis of the final results of 1991 population census of the Local Government Area.
GEOGRAPHICAL FEATURE
     he Local Government is located in the warn Tropical Region of the Rain forest of the South Western Nigeria. It experienced an average monthly rainfall of 25cm between the month of May-July and 2.5cm between December and January The Local Government Area covers an approximately 102 square kilometres with different scattered settlements.

Actually, the Local Government comprises of many urban and rural settlements which are very distance from one another.
OCCUPATION
     The Local Government Area, being located in plain and hilly terrains with beautiful climate and favourable vegetation, is noted for agricultural activities. In fact, the tropical rain coupled with rich and fertile land in the Local Government Area are responsible for predominant farmers that abound in the area.

Majority of the farmers engage in large scale production of food and cash crops such as cocoa, Kola nuts, palm products, orange, banana, maize, yam, cassava, cocoyam etc. Although peasant farming is mostly prevalent in the area, a sizeable percentage of farmers engage in other forms of agricultural practices such as poultry-keeping, animal husbandry, fishing and bee- keeping. Other occupation of the people include blacksmithing, hunting, dyeing, weaving among many others.
TRADITION AND CULTURE
The people of the Local Government Area are predominantly Yorubas of the Oyo extraction. The historical profile shows that the indigene of the area are direct descendants of Oduduwa or notable members of the ancestral ruling houses in the Old Oyo Kingdom.

The people are endowed with rich traditional and cultural institution. On the traditional rulers setting, the Obas and Baales are the traditional rulers of the principal towns. There are five(5) prominent traditional rulers tagged “Group A Obas” in the area. They are as follows: i. Oba Musa Olatunbosun - Alawo of Awo
ii. Oba Sunmonu Omolaoye - Alara of Ara
iii. Oba Aderemi A. Adedapo - Oludo of Ido-Osun
iv. Oba Abdul Fatai Olasunkanmi - Aragberi of Iragberi
v. Oba Olayinka Gbolagade Tiamiyu - Olojo of Ojo
There are many other Obas and Baales for other various towns and villages in the area. They are grouped into different categories namely Group B, Group C1 and Group C2.

The people of Egbedore Local Government Area do engage in different cultural activities such as egungun (masquerade), music, magical display, cultural dance and gymnastic display.
