Egbedore Local Government was created out of the defunct Ede Local Government on 3rd May, 1989 under the then federal Military Government headed by General Ibrahim Babangida. It is one of the seven hundred and seventy-four (774) Local Government Areas recognised by the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and also one of the thirty (30) Local Government Areas in Osun State. The Local Government covers an area of approximately 102 square kilometres. It is bounded by Ede North Local Government Area to the South, Ejigbo and Surulere Local Government Areas to the West, Irepodun Local Government Area to the North and both Olorunda and Osogbo Local Government Areas to the East.
The headquarters of the Local Government is the ancient town of Awo which was founded about 800 years ago by Oshimo, one of the two sons of Olofin in Ile-Ife, Osun State. The Local Government comprises of many other historical and notable towns and village such as Ido-Osun, Ara, Iragberi, Ojo, Ikotun, Ilawe, Iwoye, Idoo, Ofatedo, Okinni, Aro, Ekuro, Olorunsogo, Ooye, Ilaasan, Igbokiti, Abudo and many others. Although, the breakdown of provisional head-count of Year 2006 is still being awaited from the National Population Commission. However, the 1991 census conducted by the National Population Commission, put the population of Egbedore Local Government at 40,293. The Table I shows the analysis of the final results of 1991 population census of the Local Government Area.
